10 Ways To Celebrate Halloween At Home

Halloween is undeniably a fun holiday, whether you're a child or an adult. And it's a holiday that you can celebrate to its fullest potential at home!

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays, and it is undeniably one of my favorite things about Autumn. I honestly can't even imagine someone not liking Halloween, as it's a holiday that can be fun for people of all ages, and for both introverts and extraverts. Seriously, it's not just a children's holiday, nor is it just a partiers holiday. Halloween is a fun holiday for anyone who likes to have a little bit of fun, get creative, and who appreciate a good scare every now and then. Although, as someone who has a slightly "emo" or "gothic" side, and who happens to have an October birthday, I may be a little bit biased. I suppose there are some people out there who wouldn't take any pleasure in the festivities of Halloween and don't find it fun, but I am most certainly not one of those people. I absolutely love Halloween, and I always like to do at least a little something to celebrate it every year, even if I'll be celebrating it entirely on my own. That being said, as an introverted homebody, I often do end up celebrating it on my own at home, so I know quite a few ways to enjoy Halloween to it's fullest potential right from home.

Celebrating Halloween At Home

1 - Get into costume, just for fun

I absolutely love dressing up and getting into costume for Halloween. Although let me be real for a second, some of my year-round outfit choices may look like Halloween costumes to a lot of people. I absolutely love wearing gothic looks, and I wear cat ears with almost every outfit, but that's just my personal style, and for Halloween, I like to go all out and become when I'm putting together my costumes. Honestly, the costumes still my favorite part of Halloween, even as an adult, as it allows me to use my creativity in a variety of ways. Whether I'll be going anywhere or not, I find that it's a lot of fun to put a costume together and allow myself to become a completely different person for a day, even if just while sitting in my room watching Netflix or scrolling social media. But seriously, just because you might not be going anywhere for Halloween, it doesn't mean that you can't still have some fun and get into costume. If anything, you could always get some great photos for your Instagram or your scrapbook while you are in costume.

Perhaps, if you'd like to have a little extra fun while you're at home in your costume, you could act like you are the character you are dressing up as for an evening. It may seem a bit silly, but honestly, that's the point; Halloween isn't meant to be a super-serious holiday. Then, if you can get the rest of your household on board with the idea, perhaps you could make a game out of it, or put on a little Halloween play at home, and make some fun memories right at home.

2 - Get creative with your hair and makeup

Although I'm not exactly the best at hair or makeup, I personally find that getting creative with different hairstyles and different makeup looks can be a lot of fun. With that said, undeniably, the spooky season makes for the perfect opportunity to play around and to get creative with your hair and makeup, and try things you wouldn't typically try. Your options are only limited by your creativity when it comes to what you can do with your hair and makeup for Halloween, and you don't need to be a professional stylist or experienced makeup artist to create some fun looks either. You also don't necessarily need to have any special effects cosmetics either; you can get just as creative using everyday products that you already have. As I already said, you are only limited by your imagination, so just have some fun playing around and getting creative while using your hair as your medium, or your skin as your canvas. Whether you are creating a look to pull your costume together, or you're just having some fun playing around with different hairstyles and creating fun makeup looks, let yourself just have fun with it.

3 - Do some Halloween crafts and make some spooky decor

I absolutely love getting crafty, as not only is it a way to use your creativity and create your own custom decor for your space, but it is also a great way to keep yourself occupied without having to look at a screen. Plus, I must say that when you are making something for a specific season or holiday, it can certainly help you get you into the spirit of it. I also must say that Halloween is one of my favorite holidays for crafting, as there's practically no "right or wrong" way to go about it; you can keep it traditional or go full-on Halloween horror days. Or, if the spooky stuff really isn't for you, you could also choose to make some Halloween decor that creates a more "cute and sweet" sort of vibe. Seriously, it's entirely up to you. And with crafting, you can get as elaborate as you'd like, or you can always choose to keep it simple.

You also don't have to drain your bank account on supplies for your Halloween crafts. Perhaps you could look around on Pinterest for some Halloween crafting ideas that use materials that are generally low-cost and easy to find or that use stuff you may already have lying around the house. This could also make for a fantastic opportunity to repurpose a few of your lesser-loved items and turn them into some new Halloween decor that you'll love.

4 - Turn your home into a haunted house

As early as November 1st, a lot of people will go all out when it comes to "decking the halls" for Christmas, both indoors and outdoors, and through every room of the house. So, why not go all out on decorating your home for Halloween, and perhaps "deck the halls" to transform your home (or even just your room) into a haunted house? Maybe, if you'll be getting into costume this year, you can create the environment that the character you are dressing up as this year would live in; and don't be afraid to go all out with it. There are a ton of ways that you can go all out in decorating your home for Halloween, both indoors and outdoors; all you need is a little creativity. Also, if you are going to go full-on in decorating your home for Halloween, I recommend getting your decorations up in late-September or early-October; that way, you can enjoy your work for as long as possible. Plus, it'll keep you in the Halloween spirit all month long.

5 - Get creative with your favorite Halloween candy

Let me be real with you, one of the best things about the spooky season is the fact that a lot of my favorite candy starts to go on sale, even though most of my favorite treats aren't even really "Halloween candy" per se. You can buy Reese's cups and Kit Kats year-round but around Halloween, but during the spooky season, it's easy to find variety packs that are full of your favorite candies. I personally love the ones that come with Reese's, Kit Kats, Snickers, Milky Ways, and other chocolate bars in one huge value bag. I'll be honest, this doesn't promote the healthiest snacking habits for me during the Fall, but you have to treat yourself sometimes. Am I right? Anyway, if you enjoy Halloween candy as much as I do, whether it's stuff you can buy year-round or candy that's generally only sold around Halloween like candy corn or candy pumpkins, why not find a way to get creative with it?

Perhaps you could find a recipe that uses some of your favorite candies to make an entirely new dessert out of them. Or maybe, you could create an edible work of art using Halloween candy and arrange it in a fun way to set out on your table before you begin reaching for it. Perhaps you could even find a way to upcycle some of the candy wrappers in your crafts. As always, your options are only limited by your imagination and your creativity.

6 - Prepare some spooky treats

If you like to use your creativity in the kitchen, perhaps you could get a little creative and prepare some Halloween-themed treats; or you can make an entire horror-themed meal. Although I personally tend to associate decorative or themed foods more with snacks or desserts, you can add a Halloween or horror-themed twist to just about any meal. Seriously, if you want to prepare a horror-themed dinner, lunch, or even breakfast, you are only limited by your creativity. So, perhaps if you are choosing to go all-out in your at-home Halloween celebration this year, you could use your imagination with the food you'll be eating throughout the day as well. If you need some ideas for horror-themed meals, you can always look around on Pinterest for some recipes and inspiration. Once again, it's entirely up to you whether you go all-out and give every meal a horror-theme, or if you choose to keep it as simple as adding some Halloween decals to a batch of cookies or cupcakes.

7 - Put together Halloween baskets for your friends, family, and/or neighbors

If you would like to do something a little extra kind for a friend, a family member, or a neighbor, it could be a lot of fun to put together some Halloween gift baskets for them that you can drop off at their doorstep. It doesn't necessarily have to be a huge basket, and you don't have to fill it with super fancy or costly items; you can simply toss in some candy, snacks, and a few small Halloween-themed items that the person would enjoy. If the person you are making your gift basket for is a child, perhaps you could include a little toy or stuffed animal for them. Although a teen or even an adult would also appreciate a stuffed animal, so they are a pretty universal gift. For teens and adults, you can also include some small personal care items such as bath fizzers, lotions, and perhaps a Halloween-scented hand sanitizer. It's entirely up to you what you choose to include in the gift basket, and I am sure that it would maybe your friend's, family member's, or neighbor's day to know that they are cared for. It might even just lift the spirits of the neighbor kid who may be bummed about not being able to go trick-or-treating this year.

8 - Play spooky games

Halloween or horror-themed games can be a great way to keep your whole household entertained while celebrating Halloween at home. Or with a bit of creativity, you could find a way to play some horror-themed games virtually with your friends and family that you can't be with physically this Halloween. There are a ton of Halloween-themed games that can be fun for both children and for adults, and it's entirely up to you what games you choose to play for Halloween. Perhaps you want to get the whole household involved in a horror-themed scavenger hunt, or maybe you could play some Halloween-themed guessing games. There are also a ton of ways that you can add a spooky twist to some more traditional family games. You could also get creative and make up your own games entirely. Or, if you'll be spending Halloween on your own, perhaps you could play a few horror-themed video games, whether alone or with some of your online friends.

9 - Have a scary movie marathon

Honestly, for as long as I can remember, it's been a Halloween tradition for me to binge-watch horror movies during the spooky season. Even as a child, I enjoyed watching scary movies throughout October, and after I got back for trick-or-treating. But as an adult who really doesn't party, I find that I generally spend the entirety of my Halloweens watching horror movies and horror-themed shows. Especially since where I live, the weather hasn't been too pleasant on Halloween, at least not in the last few years, so I had to find something to do indoors. And undeniably, watching horror movies is a magnificent go-to Halloween activity that can keep you entertained all throughout October. Especially if you decide to watch The Walking Dead or American Horror Story all over again from their first seasons. There are so many horror movies and shows out there that you would never run out of content to watch. So whether you'll be alone or with your family at home, grab some of your favorite snacks, a cup of your favorite hot beverage, and have a scary movie marathon. Or, you could also opt to read some horror-themed books throughout October!

10 - Share your own ghost or horror stories

Although telling ghost stories may seem like a cheesy campfire or sleepover activity, I personally find that whether you're sharing one or listening to one, they can be a lot of fun. Sharing impromptu ghost or horror stories also makes for a great way to get in touch with your creative side, without needing to think too hard about it. Ghost stories can also make for a great group activity that can effortlessly be done over Zoom or Facetime. Perhaps after you start off the story, you could have each person add to it, and see where the story ends up going. If you're a writer, you could also choose to write a short ghost story for Halloween and have a bit of fun with it; it doesn't have to be a serious piece of work. Just get creative, and have some fun telling your horror stories, whether they're lighthearted and silly, or they're a bit more dark and sinister.

Although it can be a lot of fun to attend a Halloween party or go to an Autumnal festival in late-October, that doesn't mean that you can't celebrate Halloween to it's fullest potential while staying at home. Even if you will be spending Halloween on your own, or your household doesn't care much for Halloween, there are still many things that you can do to celebrate the spooky season. When it comes to how you can celebrate Halloween at home, you're really only limited by your imagination. Remember, it's entirely up to you whether you choose to go all out, or you opt to keep it as simple as watching your favorite horror films in your favorite Halloween-themed pajamas.

What are some of your favorite things to do at home on Halloween? Do you have any plans for how you're going to spend the spooky season at home this year? What movies and shows do you have on your Halloween watchlist for this year? Also, for those of you who have children, do you have any plans for keeping them entertained, and from not being too bummed about not being able to trick-or-treat this year? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Thank you for reading, and I hope the rest of your day is wonderful!
